Definition of composite primary outcome (all-cause decompensation)

• Variceal haemorrhage (VH)

• New or worsening ascites

• New or worsening hepatic encephalopathy

• Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

• Hepatorenal syndrome

• Increase in Child–Pugh grade by 1 grade or increase MELD score by 5 points

• Liver-related mortality
