From: An online behavior change intervention to promote physical activity in adults with asthma: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial

Week

Theme

TTM

BPN

Main approach

1

Getting to know the patient

Autonomy

Test during the week types of PA which the patient can perform

Competence

Train in the session PA/exercises that the patient can perform/knowing the activity monitor

Relatedness

Know previous experiences of the patient related to PA/introduce the group

2

Why to be physically active?

Self-liberation (making a commitment)

Autonomy

Choose the when, how, and the type of PA that will perform

Competence

Achievable goals, but with a certain challenge (contract)

Relatedness

Contract is a commitment between the patient the therapist

3

Monitoring (group session)

achallenge

Contingency management (Using rewards)

Autonomy

Celebrating small victories

Competence

Group challenge (gamification)

Relatedness

Encouraging them to achieve the week group goals

4

Barriers to PA

Stimulus control (Managing the environment)

Autonomy

Recognition of the patient’s perspective on barriers

Competence

Identifying barriers and indicating ways to overcome them

Relatedness

Use an object with a color that represents the group

5

Sedentary lifestyle (group session)

Counterconditioning (using substitutes)

Autonomy

Recognizing environmental potential to reduce sedentary lifestyle and increase PA

Competence

Focus goals on the process

Relatedness

Encouraging reminders to reduce sedentary lifestyle and increase PA in the group

6

Goals review

Consciousness raising (getting the facts)

Autonomy

Visualizing the progress

Competence

Controlling of patient evolution/learning calculation of average and goal of steps per day of the week

Relatedness

Strengthening the bond between patient and therapist

7

Responsibility

Dramatic relief (paying attention to feelings)

Autonomy

Awareness of the importance of attendance

Competence

Giving positive feedback

Relatedness

Understanding feelings related to PA

8

Social support

achallenge

Helping relationships (getting support)

Autonomy

Discussion on what motivates to continue doing PA

Competence

Challenge of doing PA with a person this week

Relatedness

Searching for social support

9

Perceived benefits (group session)

Environmental revaluation and social liberation

Autonomy

Recognition of the patient’s perspective

Competence

Feedback on how or not you achieved the result

Relatedness

Exchanging experiences with the group

10

Possible relapses

Temptation

Autonomy

Action plan ideas

Competence

Drawing up action plans for possible relapses

Relatedness

Strengthen the group’s bond

11

Self-re-evaluation

Self-revaluation (creating a new self-image) and decisional balance (pros and cons)

Autonomy

Guidance with intrinsic objective

Competence

Training/teaching things they failed to do

Relatedness

Long-term goals (group session)

Autonomy

A leadership profile will be responsible for the group

Competence

Providing encouragement and support

Relatedness

Strengthen the group’s bond

  1. The intervention will be delivered once a week for 12 weeks. The program will encompass the processes of change and other TTM techniques. Every session will include the BPN issues (autonomy, competence and relatedness) to facilitate intrinsic motivation from the self-determination theory. TTM transtheoretical model, BPN basic psychological needs.
  2. aChallenges will be used as a form of gamification to move to “another level”
